One of our Elders say that "maj thiaj yog HMoob lis" (English: "hemp is HMong people's"). These rolls of hemp are hand grown, harvested, retted, spun, and woven. The process from start to end is labor intensive. These rolls have been washed in ash, so they are bit softer and white than hemp fabric that has freshly woven.
Hemp has sacred and spiritual and cultural signficiance to HMong people from start to end of life. Hemp fabric is used for clothing, rituals, and more. For end of life, a long roll of hemp was used as the hluas cab nees as families send their loved one back to the ancestors. Don't know what a hluas cab nees is? Ask us or your Elders!
